Terlingua Ghost Town Near Big Bend Park, Texas

One of the most remote places in the United States is the Big Bend area, which includes the nearly one million acre Big Bend National Park. Just a few miles away from the park’s western entrance is the old ghost town of Terlingua. Home to numerous Chili Cookoffs and motorcycle rallies it is truly a place at the end of the world.

It was once a mercury mining town, whose miners often fell ill due to “quicksilver posion”.  What remain of the old town are a few old adobe buildings and some that have been restored into residences. The Starlight Theater features music and dancing several nights a week.  Dotted around the Terlingua ghost town there are dozens of abandoned mineshafts. Visitors are urged to stay away from these.

If you have lived in a city most of your life you will find the stars at night in Terlingua amazing. The Big Bend area is widely known to astronomers as one of the darkest sky areas in North America.
